Campobello Island - Bar Harbor (Acadia National Park)
Back in the USA! First stop is Campobello Island (actually, this is located in Canada, but the only road access is through the U.S.). So what is Campobello, well, it's where FDR had his summer home way before he ran for governor of New York, and before he had contracted polio. It's a beautiful island that was home to many of New York's wealthy families with their little "cottages".
We had seen several bald eagles, but never in a situation where I could get a picture. This was taken while watching the seals.
This is the Roosevelt "cottage" at Campobello Island. FDR's mother gave it to the happy couple after they were married in the early 1900's. Nice gift (although it's been modified a little from the original). Remember, no electricity or modern plumbing back in those days
The lighthouse at the entrance to the harbor at Campobello Island. We did a wonderful little hike on this place where we took the following pictures.
Harbor seals just off the coast on Cambobello. We could have watched for hours as they played and dove for food!
And on to Bar Harbor. Since the heavy tourist season is over, we could have the best spots at the local campgrounds. Not bad, overlooking the sound between the mainland and Mount Desert Island where Acadia National Park is located.
Ho, humm ..... just another great view along the coast. This is in Acadia National Park which has some great hiking trails.
This is from the top of Cadilac Mountain. A picture of Bar Harbor (which is a tourist trap) looking down. It's another great location, but we prefered some of the more remote trails that you will see below.
This is from a trail along the Acadian NP coast. It wasn't one of our favorites but this was typical of the views along the trail.
From Bar Harbor, a few of the "boats" sailing around the harbor. This place is packed from the tour ships that come through this time of the year.
We had some great hikes here. The following pictures are from the same hike which was only about 3 1/2 miles. Our first objective was Parkman Mtn. (this is the picture above) which was about 700 feet above the trailhead.
And here we are on top of Parkman Mtn. As you can see, there are a lot of rocks on these hikes. We were scrambling over a lot of big outcroppings of granite to make it to the top. Nice views!
This is looking at our next objective, Bald Mtn., from the top of Parkman Mtn. Just a "short" 1/2 mile away. Down and up. This was a great day with temps in the mid 60's but a little breezy.
And here we are on top of Bald Mtn where we had a nice lunch break. Took our time to enjoy the views, no crowds, and just relaxed for about 30 minutes before heading back down. If we had some bikes, we could have taken advantage of the many "carriage trails" that were made by the Rockefeller's who first made this a place for the wealthy.
This is the view from the top of Bald Mountain where we took some time to enjoy the solitude and the beauty of this special place!
So now we are going to head out to Portland for reprovisioning, visiting with friends, and getting ready to go on up into New Hampshire and Vermont to take in the New England fall leaves. We hear it's going to be a late fall although we are beginning to see some "color" here in Bar Harbor. We'll see! If we need to, we'll just stay until the leaves change!
